MOT Testing

The MOT scheme is primarily a road safety measure designed to ensure as far as possible that all cars, motorcycles and light goods vehicles more than 3 years old meet minimum safety standards. At least once a year your car will be examined at an authorised MOT test station to make sure that it complies with certain important requirements of the law.

The test certificate and examination however, only relates to the condition of the testable items at the time of the test and should not be regarded as evidence of their condition at any other time; nor should it be accepted as evidence of the general mechanical condition of the vehicle. MOT a Car aim to give you the best advice on your car and its annual MOT test and any repairs if necessary in order to pass.

– What the MOT includes

Body / vehicle structure / general items: Free from excessive corrosion or damage in specific areas. No sharp edges likely to cause injury. Towbars for security / condition / inappropriate repairs or modification. Correct operation of 13 pin electrical socket. Speedometer condition and operation. Engine mountings.

Fuel System: No leaks. Security and condition of pipes / hoses. Fuel cap fastens and seals securely. Note: the fuel cap will need to be opened. Make sure the key is available.

Exhaust emissions: Vehicle meets the requirements for exhaust emissions, dependent on the age and fuel type of the vehicle.

Exhaust system: Secure. Complete. Catalyst missing where one was fitted as standard. Without serious leaks and is not too noisy.

Seat belts: All the seat belts fitted are checked for type, condition, operation and security. All mandatory seat belts must be in place. Check of the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) for air bags and seat belt pre tensioners and load limiters.

Seats: Drivers seat for adjustment. All seats for security and seat backs can be secured in the upright position.

Doors: Latch securely in closed position. Front doors should open from inside and outside the vehicle. Rear doors should open from outside the vehicle. Hinges and catches for security and condition.

Mirrors: Minimum number required, condition and security. Indirect vision devices.

Load security: Boot or tailgate can be secured in the closed position.

Brakes: Condition including inappropriate repairs or modifications, operation and performance (efficiency test). Note the removal of the road wheels and trims are not part of the test. Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and Electronic Stability Control (ESC) where fitted. Check of the dashboard Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) for ABS, ESC, electronic park brake and brake fluid warning.

Tyres and wheels: Condition, security, tyre size/type and tread depth. Spare wheels and tyres are not inspected. Note: vehicles first used on or after 1 January 2012 – check of the MIL for Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS).

Registration plates: Condition, security, colour, characters correctly formed and spaced.

Lights: Condition, operation including High Intensity Discharge (HID) and Light Emitting Diode (LED) headlamps for cleaning, self leveling and security. Headlamp aim. Main beam warning light.

Bonnet: Securely latches in the closed position.

Wipers/washers: Operate to give the driver a clear view ahead.

Windscreen: Condition and driver’s view of the road.

Horn: Correct operation and of suitable type.

Steering and suspension: Condition, steering oil level, operation, a check for inappropriate repairs or modification including corrosion to power steering pipes or hoses. Operation of steering lock mechanism. Check of the MIL for electronic power steering and steering lock.

Vehicle identification number: Present on vehicles first used on or after 1 August 1980. A single VIN is displayed except on multistage build vehicles. (e.g. van conversion, BMW/Alpina etc.)

Electrical: Visible electrical wiring and battery.


Most modern cars only need a service once a year, but older cars require a service once every six months. allergy relief. Please check the manufacturer’s service handbook as it will clearly state what is best for your car. The type of service you need will also be affected by how you use your car. For example, lots of short journeys where the engine does not have a chance to warm up properly will probably mean more frequent oil and filter changes. MOT a Car has access to manufacturers service schedules on computer and can advise you on the appropriate service that is due.

When organising a car service, it’s important that you establish what the service includes. Some garages will change only your oil filter, others will carry out a full service. At MOT A Car, we follow a checklist and give you a copy of that completed checklist as a confirmation of a job well done. As a Good Garage Scheme member, we carry out servicing incorporating the Industry Standard Service Checklist.

Running faults and repairs

Ask to speak to a mechanic or a technician about the problem. Explain the problem in as much detail as you can. If you can, include when the problem occurs, for example only when the engine is cold, or after the vehicle has been left standing.

Do I need to take my car to a main dealer?

European Commission rules on car block exemption came into full effect in October 2003. This new ruling allows independent garages the same access to technical information on your car from the manufacturer, and more importantly, it means you do not need to go back to a franchise dealer to retain warranty cover.


MOT a Car keep a selection of the most popular sizes of tyre in stock for immediate replacement, should your car require it. If we have not got the size or make that you need, it can usually be sourced the same day via one of our three preferred wholesalers, with up to two deliveries to us every weekday. MOT a Car do not sell remould, or used tyres with an unknown history, we would rather keep a selection of good quality budget tyres.


MOT a Car can carry out brake repairs to most makes of car, whether as part of your annual MOT, routine service, or an emergency repair to keep you on the road.

Repairs & Welding

MOT a Car can carry out a range of repairs to keep your car on the road, or we can point you in the right direction to a specialist if needed.

Should your car need any welded repairs in order to pass its annual MOT test, then we would be pleased to give you an estimate.

Car Batteries

We keep a selection of the most popular batteries in stock, either for you to take away, or we can fit for a small charge.


We can arrange for your windscreen to be replaced with a local specialist, either on site here at MOT a Car, or possibly your place of work, or home address. Our specialist can deal with billing most insurance companies directly, leaving you to pay any access that is due on your policy. A windscreen claim will not normally affect your no claims bonus.

Air Conditioning

We offer two types of air conditioning services: Air Conditioning Re-Gas and Air Conditioning Clean. These services will ensure that your car’s air-con is working efficiently, also removing any unpleasant smells.

Air Conditioning Refresh £19.99

The Air Conditioning Clean service removes all the harmful bacteria that can build up within the air conditioning system. By circulating a special cleaner through all air intakes and venting systems this service removes any unpleasant smells, leaving your car interior smelling clean and fresh. We recommend that this service is carried out once a year in order to keep your air conditioning system as clean as possible.

Air Conditioning Re-Gas £59.99*

It is recommended that you should recharge your air conditioning system every 2 years with gas and lubricant, in order to keep it running efficiently. This is not included as part of a routine car service and so it can often be overlooked. If your car is more than 2 years old it is more than likely due a recharge.

Our Re-Gas service ensures that your air conditioning system is working efficiently by testing the gas pressure to see if it has dropped. A drop in gas pressure will result in a loss of cooling efficiency, which will make your engine work harder and in turn use more fuel.
